Joint Forestry Expo Sept 26, 2018 Showcase

Local Forestry Related Careers

(Meadow Lake, September 21, 2018) A joint forestry expo hosted by Tolko’s Meadow Lake (ML) OSB Division, the Meadow Lake Mechanical Pulp Mill and Mistik Management is being held September 26, 2018 at the Meadow Lake Civic Center to showcase the many career opportunities available to local students and residents.

“Partnering with Tolko on this great event showcasing the many career options within the forest industry is key to the core values of Paper Excellence,” shares Kathy Cloutier, Director of Corporate Communications, Paper Excellence. “The human resources team at our Meadow Lake Mechanical Pulp Mill have done a fantastic job and are really looking forward to sharing the wide variety of careers that today's students have available to them in our industry.”

An interactive, fun approach is planned for the entire event to help foster a solid learning experience in a variety of areas such as safety, HR, engineering, IT, accounting, forestry sciences, and many more. Booths set up for each career area will engage participants with events and activities that allow partakers to experience elements of each type of career. Employees that work in the respective fields will present and guide groups of students and local residents through various tasks.

“There are very little forestry-related avenues in this community to connect our upcoming youth with the many career opportunities right in their own backyard,” comments Tolko’s organizer and liaison Sherri Roger. “This event is another way that we can reach out to our junior high and high schools and help make our community aware of what the forestry industry really offers in way of career choices.”

The forestry expo is open to the public and to students. Invitations to local schools in Meadow Lake and the surrounding area confirm approximately 300 combined student participants from Jonas Samson Junior High, Carpenter High, Dorintosh Central, Goodsoil Central, Green Acre, and St. Walburg schools are taking part in this engaging and educational event.

Participants will cycle through the booths in groups of 10, with approximately 10 minutes to complete tasks in each area. Students have been divided into a morning (9:15am – 11:45am) and an afternoon (1:15pm – 3:15pm) session to accommodate the large number of participants, and open from 9:15am – 3:15pm to the public.

The idea for the career fair came from a similar collaborative event in Alberta which Tolko’s High Prairie Division participated in earlier this year.
